Thoughts
I think what the book is really saying is that when people do something that is just hard enough, they get so absorbed that they even lose track of time.Work that’s just hard enough makes time disappear.
Focus isn’t effort; it’s putting your attention on one thing.
The book made me rethink work, time and focus; the author’s TED talk is worth a look too.
TIP
Before the next read, put the phone in another room.
Pick something just hard enough
Turn off notifications; do only that
Afterwards, note how long it took
Ch. 3: The eight elements of flow
Ch. 7: Flow at work
This afternoon: back to On Writing, taking notes as I go.
Tonight: turn the notes into a review for the blog.
This weekend: a walk by the lake, with the book and a pen.
The first read is fast; the second one slows down.
Slow down, and the trace in the water shows.
Writing is probably the same.

notes.md — Koimark
Writing Markdown should feel this easy.
A clean, lightweight WYSIWYG editor with an AI helper built in. Your files stay plain .md on your Mac.
Version 1.2.9 · Free during the public beta · For macOS 11 or later, on Apple silicon and Intel Macs
WYSIWYG
Type ## for a heading, **bold** turns bold; marks show only where your cursor is.
Tables
Edit in the cell, add and remove rows and columns, Tab between cells.
Math and diagrams
KaTeX and Mermaid, with the source shown only when your cursor is inside.
Code blocks
Syntax highlighting, with a language label you can change in place.
Tasks and callouts
Clickable checkboxes; callouts colored by type.
Images and attachments
Paste or drop them in; they’re saved to an assets folder next to your note.
Folders, outline and [[wikilinks]]
Open a whole folder with a file tree and outline; ⌘-click a wikilink to jump to that note.
Tabs
Several notes in one window, with a dot on the ones not yet saved.
Source, focus and typewriter modes
⌘/ for the raw text, F8 to light only the paragraph you’re writing, F9 to keep the line you’re typing in the middle.
Dark mode
Follows the system, or switch it yourself.
AI panel
Bring your own model (8 providers); select text and ask, and the edit lands in place — undoable.
Connect AI tools
Claude Code, Cursor and more can read and edit the document you have open.
Live external changes
When another app changes the file, you see it right away, with the changed spot highlighted.
Export and print
Export to HTML, PDF, Word or an image, or print directly.
Five languages
English, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Japanese and German — follows your system language.
Does the AI take my documents?
Nothing goes through us. What you send from the AI panel goes straight from your Mac to the model provider you set up yourself; if you don’t use the AI panel, nothing is sent.
Will it change how my files are formatted?
Your content and how it looks won’t change. In files you edit, a few writing habits may be normalized, such as list markers or extra blank lines; they read exactly the same. Files you only open are never written.
Can I open my existing notes folder?
Yes. Open the whole folder; wikilinks, tags, callouts, YAML front matter and the like are written back as they were.
Where are my files? Do I need an account?
On your own Mac, as plain .md files. No account, and your files never go through a server.
Does Koimark connect to the internet?
Only in three cases: to show web images your documents link to; to reach the model provider you set up, when you use the AI panel; and to check for updates — once at launch and once a day it asks koimark.com whether a new version exists, carrying none of your documents, account or device details. You can turn update checks off in the Koimark menu.
Windows or Linux?
macOS only for now: macOS 11 or later, on both Apple silicon and Intel Macs.
Koimark says it needs a newer system web engine. What do I do?
Koimark needs the web engine from Safari 16.4 or later. macOS 13.3 and later already have it; on macOS 11 or 12, open System Settings (or System Preferences) → Software Update, update Safari or macOS, then reopen Koimark.
A koi swims through; the water keeps moving, but the trace it leaves stays. Writing is leaving marks in the stream of your thoughts; Koimark keeps them as you left them.
